Selby is a major bookworm and from her early beginnings she has always been a bit detached from the rest of the world. She was raised in a household where her parents didn't seem to have time for her, and so she turned to her favorite things to keep her company and make her happy. Her books. The one thing her parents did seem to give her when she requested it. Her mother was constantly sick growing up which made Selby greatly interested in becoming a doctor. She would spend countless hours pouring over a few of the medical books that her father procured for her and though she didn't really know what she was doing, she tried to fix her teddy bears and dolls ailments. In school she spent many hours staying away from the other children as she was smaller and wore glasses which made her ripe for ridicule. This made Selby become quite guarded and she adopted sarcasm as a second language to deal with her bullies.
Selby was always very gloomy as a child, and continued to stay detached from the rest of the family. She was very kind and loving to those who came around and who treated her well at school, but any time it was just her and her family she was very distant and uncaring. She still studied and read as much as she could about medicine and anything really, but being only nine and ten she wasn't able to read or learn much. In her early teens her father stepped out on the family, leaving Selby alone with an ailing mother and a younger brother. She couldn't keep herself distanced anymore and took on the role of mother to her brother, and caretaker to her mother. She didn't enjoy it much, but she couldn't let her brother suffer for her parents poor choices.
Aside from wearing glasses, which Selby actually enjoyed as it made her unique, she has quite a reputation for being clumsy. Especially when stairs are involved. She's fallen up and down the stairs countless times, usually spilling the books and items she had in her hands at the time. In science she has a habit of knocking vials over as she doesn't pay attention to where she sets them on the table, and has on a few occasions managed to get her dinner all over her outfit instead of in her mouth. Mostly because, like always, her nose was in a book instead of paying attention to what her hands were doing.

Long before Selby was even a twinkle in her father's eye, Robert King was an exceptionally well known lawyer who lost interest in court dates and guilty parties. As part of a new program offered by his firm in London, Robert volunteered and was sent to Australia to work pro-bono for a few years. As a way to give back to the world. Needless to say, Robert quite enjoyed his new desk job and found that being able to walk around without being recognized was quite pleasant. He enjoyed it so much in fact, that he walked to and from work everyday, and eventually came upon a small book store that held some sort of interest for him. In the window of the store there was a display of books about mythical creatures and magical places. Becoming intrigued he entered the store and found the love of his life, Melissa Bulstrode. Melissa was a helpless romantic and when Robert proposed after only a few months, she said yes and they eloped.
Robert and Melissa welcomed Selby into the world less than a year after their marriage. After the birth of their daughter, Melissa started to feel sick and spent more time at home with Selby then she did in the store. Robert wasn't terribly worried about her sickness, seeing as he had the money to get her the best treatment, he figured she would be cured in no time. However, there wasn't much anyone could do for her, and Melissa eventually had to deal with never leaving the house and working from home. A few years later however, they welcomed a baby boy into the world and while Robert was ecstatic about the birth, her mother deteriorated even more. For all of Selby's life her mother was sick and distant from her children.
Selby became very distant from her family, watching as her mother got more and more sick and her father slowly disolve into an alcoholic. Her brother was the only saving grace in the family, and although Selby didn't give him the attention he deserved, she felt bad. By the time Selby was ten her father had wasted away and left the family. Taking everything with him, the sickness of his wife and the responsibilities her had to her and both Selby and her brother were too much for him. Selby still doesn't know where her father ended up, and she honestly doesn't care. With her mother still sick, and barely any kind of income, Selby had to try and find work somewhere. She started cleaning tables at a local diner to help pay the bills. She could only work a couple hours a week and under the table seeing as she was barely eleven at the time.
On her thirteenth birthday, Selby's mom passed away. Leaving her and her younger brother to fend for themselves. Afraid of being put into the foster system and separated, Selby and her brother fled the home and she started working as much as she could, neglecting school, so as to keep food in their bellies. She was given a job at a diner in Queanbeyan, working as a dish-washer and bus-boy for what little the owners were allowed to give her. Selby took what she was given, bought small amounts of the basic necessities her brother and she needed and returned to the abandoned building the two were living in. Selby wasn't able to provide much, though she made sure her brother was in day-care, and school when it came to it, even at the expense of her own schooling and need of food. Yet she refused to allow them to end up in an orphanage, she didn't want to be separated from her brother, he was all Selby had, and she couldn't lose him.
Eventually, the two of them moved to Sydney, in order for Selby to try and find a better paying job, and for a more appropriate schooling for her brother. Here, she met Rick Ashton, an older gentlemen who recently lost his family and was awed by Selby's story. He took the both of them in, introduced them both to the world of the Hunters and pretty much adopted the two of them. After some time, Rick decided it was time for Selby to venture out, since he noticed her isolated state towards everyone but her brother.
When Selby turned seventeen he sent Selby on her first real "mission". Selby would attend Masquerade Academy, working there undercover for the Guild. Selby only agreed because she knew that Rick would take better care of her brother then she ever could, and angering him by refusing the mission, may end up in the both of them out in the street once more.
