MORTIMER IS NOT without his ambition, but he does little to properly attest to that. Morty is, above all else, the personification of the term chill. Little seems to faze him, and his adaptability and charisma allow for him to exude an air of cool nonchalance regardless of the levity of any given situation. He seems to belong more at a guitar shop rather than a classroom, but, lo and behold, his love of teaching far exceeds his love of groovy atmospheric tunes, which is likely a blessing. As a result of his apparent laid-back demeanor, he seems to be more lenient with students than some other teachers - to a reasonable extent – and so he is less likely to get bent out of shape over dress code misdemeanors or student arguments.
This is partially due to Morty's inability to react to situations emotionally as well as the majority of the population can. Not that he isn't emotional - on the contrary, his emotional intensity is the driving factor of his very being - but he has difficulty communicating his feelings on a personal level in a way that shows how he’s actually feeling. Without meaning to, he waves off sadness simply because it's difficult for him to visibly convey that he's actually feeling sad, regardless of how he is perceiving the situation. He can bite back anger easily enough, but seems less hesitant to express it, typically via snide remarks - or violence, should a situation call for it, but he has an incredibly clean record since reaching adulthood, so that reaction is significantly less viable. Morty also has an undeniable adoration of gossip, contrary to appearances, and engages in it as often as possible. He rarely spreads gossip, however, so much as he listens to the tales and stores the information for later.
Morty is undoubtedly social, finding solace in knowing as much about as many people as he can. He's typically able to lead a conversation without scaring off anyone, and is able to adapt himself to numerous situations to make himself seem as charming and personable as possible. If someone seems uncomfortable conversing with him, he knows when to cut off a conversation and leave things alone. He enjoys trying to unravel someone’s thought process, and finds himself enjoying empathizing with the plights of others.
His sociability is the main reason he found himself so drawn to literature in the first place. Discussing stories always gave rise to interesting discussions in class, and he discovered that his peers could convey more about their emotional state through writing than in most other mediums. Seeing other's interpretation of poetry or hearing their stance on particular moral issues always was the highlight of his day, and so pursuing it as a career seemed like an idea, opportunity for him.
As mentioned before, Morty is an emotional powerhouse, even if he doesn't initially seem like it. His romantic drive is the primary flame that pushes him forward, and he strives to achieve as many emotional connections - platonic or romantic - as physically possible. His bonds are deep and personal, but this only increases the likelihood of devastation should these bonds be severed, whether through betrayal, distance, or simply breaking it off. Whenever this happens, he questions his own self-worth at best and completely shuts down at worst.
Perhaps his most notable vice is his loyalty, as his attempt to adapt and empathize with others can lead to him being easily manipulated. The stronger his bond to someone, the more likely it is that he'll walk with them into hell. Caring for the wrong people could be a dreadful mistake.

MORTIMER WAS THE FIRST-BORN child of Blake and Abha Hatten, born in the untamed countryside of rural Georgia. Blake Hatten, Morty’s father, was a former military man from Kansas, and had decided that the crisp air of the south would be the ideal for his dream family plan, and so Morty was raised off of a ranch for the entirety of his young life. And, like most children born in the south, Morty quickly discovered his dream was to get out of the south.
School passed by like a summer breeze – appreciated, but not quite there long enough to be satisfactory. Morty wasn’t necessarily the best at getting his schoolwork done – or showing up on time, for that matter – but he did enjoy school. The social aspect was his favorite, considering he had enough close friends to form a small army, but he did enjoy the learning aspect, too. He struggled with quizzes, but he managed to pass his classes, and made it past middle school without too much difficulty.
His father pushed him to do sports, as it was a great southern tradition to devote your life to some sport or another. Morty dabbled in just about all of them, but his favorite – and the one he chose to pursue most actively – was cross-country track. In fact, he had big dreams of being a track star before high school taught him the joys of arguing over books. Track bought him a rush few other hobbies could deliver, and he loved it.
He found out that he had his gift when practicing for track, actually. He was running down a dirt road by his house when, by some freak accident, a drunk driver crashed against him from behind. Of course, Morty had seen the impending doom and tried to dive away, but his legs were still struck by the vehicle. Instead of breaking, however, his legs stretched against the impact and effectively tied his body into a knot around the car. It was a traumatizing experience for everyone involved.
High school happened, and, as soon as it happened, was over. The most significant thing about high school were the few flings that happened and made him feel high, but those were over just as quickly as they started. Coming to terms with his sexuality was a big deal, as was winning prom king and getting kicked out of the football stadium, but nothing impacted him as much as his first break-up and his first 'you're a disappointment to the family' speech. Those left a dark enough mark that the second he was of age, he left his strict, conservative [ albeit loveable and genuinely trying their hardest ] parents to live a few miles out in an apartment behind a local convenience store. He would have liked to move to the city and chased his dreams of rock and roll, but he didn’t quite have the funding for that.
He did, however, manage to land a few decent scholarships over his track career and some journal entries he submitted to a local, small-time university. With that and a few student loans, he decided to take a risk and see what college could offer him, and he managed to get a teaching gig at the university halfway through his quest to get a degree, effectively paying his way through the rest of the program.
Moving to a school inhabited by people with abilities just as eccentric as his own was the biggest risk of his career. Living a life of moderate comfort where he was, with all of his relationships intact, seemed to be the best choice for him, but Mortimer had dreams. Not big dreams, mind you, but he wouldn’t achieve any dreams sitting in the same place for the rest of his life. He took a shot in the dark, opting to return to his life of lower-middle-class luxury should all go wrong.
But it seems it was a risk worth taking.

ABILITY/POWER :: Elasticity – Mortimer has the ability to alter his body on a bio-molecular level, allowing for him to stretch any of his body parts to seemingly impossible lengths. While stretching too far for too long can cause serious physical and mental stress, Morty finds that his ability works best when used short-term as a party trick. Regardless, elasticity has numerous uses that can allow for a significant advantage against foes, such as being too large to topple, or by inflating his fists so large that any punch could cause significant damage. Or, best of all, picking up the pesky remote on the other end of the room without getting up. The increased mobility and strategic capabilities opened by elasticity are endless, even if it looks rather silly in the long run.

° Adaptable
° Obstinate
