HUGO IS CHARACTERIZED BY his unmoving resilience and sharp wit. There is rarely a situation where his peers would see him give up. He grasps onto the fringes of high society with the readiness to adapt — changing to the world around him. Despite being a youthful shifter, Hugo is wise beyond his years. He knows that he isn’t an invincible force to be reckoned with. Nor is he the smartest individual in the world. He understands that he can become emotional, make mistakes, and bleed. There are moments when he’ll recognize his limits and that is what sets him apart from the many. Hugo identifies his own faults and finds ways to work around them. Frankly, the shifter sees himself as a survivor. With that being said, his realistic views don’t always stop him from making stupid mistakes.
HUGO IS UNDENIABLY sociable. He is a curious soul and always finds himself in an investigative mood. There is a desire to understand everything that is around him—such as the pavement and the skyscrapers that were built upon them. Because of his naturally inquisitive mind, the shifter is often seen mingling with others in order to gain more information. If Hugo is not seen around his peers, one can reckon he is holed up in some room along with his fortress of books. Although he doesn’t spend all of his time learning, Hugo does find the process of learning enjoyable and a reliable method to waste time. In fact, his constant studying has led to an interest in architecture and the English language.
HOWEVER, HUGO’S WORLD isn’t a cruise by any means. He does struggle with his own doubts and demons. Although he puts up the front of being fine, Hugo is largely insecure about his own worth. As the second eldest son to a successful line of shifters, the boy’s life of grandeur is under the scrutiny of his family and those around him. He is expected to become one of the best — a powerful subordinate that his clan’s future Alpha could rely upon. His environment is cutthroat and unforgiving. In Hugo’s world, acceptance only comes from being ahead of everyone else. Due to such, Hugo projects his frustrations onto others with sadistic pleasure. He can be seen as a stuck-up bully by those that unfavorably cross his path and he is not the type of person to forget a face either. His coping mechanisms towards family issues might be downright insane, but it is one of Hugo’s only ways to deal with his problems.
TO CLOSE FRIENDS, Hugo is a playful and loving being. It isn’t hard to see the effort he puts into maintaining the happiness of his friends. He would travel the world for them, because they are the only ones that he trusts. If they ever needed someone to rant to, Hugo wouldn’t mind pushing back obligations just to hear them out. Anyone that messes with his friends could expect his fury a few short moments later. The shifter cherishes his friends and places his life in the hands of those that he loves.
UNDERSTANDING HUGO IS a difficult task. He is very similar to a loose cannon – a bomb with an unknown timer. Hugo seeks out his place in this world and he will do anything to find out where exactly that place is.
`` FAVORABLE TO compliments, cold showers, aquatic mammals (sea otters in particular), architecture, books
`` UNFAVORABLE TO alcohol (can't hold his own liquor), siblings, storms
`` ENJOYS learning, flying, being with friends, being goofy (every once and a while), thrills, hunting
`` AFRAID OF complacency, cats and feline shifters, being disowned/stray

* The Han-Eul Clan was a sizable Eastern Bird Clan for centuries, reputable amongst shifters for their strength and old-fashioned beliefs. Hugo’s ancestry had close ties to the original founders of the clan – an undying loyalty that had stayed within his family for as long as they could remember.
______________________________________
Hugo was born in Incheon, South Korea – spending his childhood in a strict and rigorous environment. For as long as Hugo could remember, his wealthy parents saw him more as a soldier than a son and it had shown through their time together. In fact, his childhood was more like a boot camp than anything else. Perfect posture, succinct responses and formal speech were only a few of the many rules required within the household. With stern and influential shifters as parents, the boy, along with his siblings, had been groomed to be ideal warriors for the Ha-neul Clan*. Hugo was never nurtured, but trained. His parents filled Hugo and his siblings’ youth with expectations – tasks that stifled any other interests they had. Instead of games and fantasies, Hugo dreamt of servitude and an honorable death. His mind had been filled with lessons of sciences and foreign language. And for Hugo, there was nothing more he had wanted. After all, this was what he had been taught — camaraderie and familial love conveyed the same thing to Hugo. To him, this is what ‘living’ meant.
That was, until he met Nari.
At the age of eight, Hugo began to take classes at a camp the Ha-neul Clan prepared for their young over the summer. The camp had been close to the clan’s location and allowed young shifters to broaden their experiences. It was a culture shock to the boy. He realized he was further ahead than the rest of his peers in terms of their education. This resulted in the development of arrogance. Hugo was better, superior in every way. The shifter’s pride had become a wall that stopped him from making friends. But there was one individual that had started to hammer at his walls. Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t a peer but his teacher, Nari. She was the peculiar shifter of the clan – one that seemingly never lost her youthful spirit. Nari never yelled and solved problems without force. If Hugo had been a stubborn rock, then Nari was a river that picked him up and showed him the way. At first, the two were at odds, but gradually Hugo’s walls crumbled. Nari had become a mother figure to him. She taught him there was more to the world than being obedient and awaiting the next duty.
Once the summer had ended, Hugo returned home. Much to his discontent, ‘home’ was never the same. He had started to realize what his family had lacked, but never had the courage to stand up for what he believed was wrong. He finally saw the twisted love that had taken place within his household for what it was. His siblings didn’t love each other — they were scheming, looking for the next moment to receive praise from their parents. His parents didn’t want children, they wanted successors to the family name. The nights were never peaceful to Hugo anymore. What kept him sane was the spark of rebellion that had lit within him — a flame that would never quite seem to die out.
Another summer had come and Hugo spent his time with Nari once more. She gave him a happiness that made his days blissful. She taught him how to be warm, playful and accepting. Hugo started to make friends. Over that summer, the world was his oyster and he felt as if nothing could’ve stopped him.
Nearing the end of his second summer at the camp, the Ha-neul Clan started fighting with a local cat Pride. It was a conflict for control. The clan had been fading away due to their poor adaptation into the modern world. The name Ha-neul no longer struck awe amongst shifters. Hugo was ten at the time and had the misfortune of being caught in the middle of it all.
On his way home from camp, Hugo had been kidnapped by a feline shifter. The moment was all a blur – the boy felt himself thrown onto the concrete before blacking out. Once he had come to, he was at the mercy of a tiger shifter. Hugo was confused, scared and couldn’t bring himself to control his emotions. Thankfully, the Ha-neul clan had come to his aid before it was too late. The tiger had left him traumatized, along with a deep wound on his right shoulder.
When Hugo was eleven, the Ha-neul Clan had decided to merge with another clan in the west. Many members of the Ha-neul Clan members deserted after the conflict with the cat Pride, including Nari. The clan was no longer safe and a conclusion had been decided. However, the Alpha from the western clan would remain as the leader due to their bigger size and strength. A new name for the clan was also decided, the Clover. Soon after, Hugo’s clan had started to migrate to the US to join their western allies.
Now at the age of nineteen, Hugo attends Masquerade Academy in Brookings alongside other new members within the flock. He has been tasked to look after the next-in-line, a future Alpha candidate that is the same age as Hugo. And although it is a bit of work, Hugo strives to do it in spectacular fashion.
